Prior to co-founding Syncata, Ujj worked for Drexel Burnham Lambert as an associate. He specialized in quantitative modeling and research. During his two-and-a-half year tenure at Drexel, Ujj was responsible for projects for Ted Turner, Rupert Murdoch, MCI, Merv Griffin, and others. He also created an exclusive database for Drexel, which enabled the company to track businesses, which were for sale, pairing them with potential buyers. One of the significant projects on which Ujj worked at Drexel was a worldwide satellite time purchase by Ted Turner to create CNN in 1987. Ujj and his team modeled the most efficient deal structure, taking into account local tax codes and regulations. Ujj’s introduction to information technology came in 1984 while he was studying for his Master’s degree at the University of Texas at Austin’s McCombs School of Business. He registered for computer science classes, hoping to expand his understanding of the then-nascent technology. After several courses, he switched from teaching chemistry to a programming position in the education department. There he worked on a project to determine the effectiveness of schools in relationship to funding and student-teacher ratios. Ujj programmed a data envelopment analysis which predicted those schools that would be most successful, and determined that their success was closely tied to student-teacher ratios. In addition to his Master’s in Business Administration from McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin, Ujj holds a bachelor’s degree in general science from the Institute of Technology B.H.U. in Varanasi, India.
