Honorary Doctorate for Mr. Narayana Murthy

PRESS RELEASE: March 2003

Mr. N. R. Narayana Murthy, Chairman of the Board and Chief Mentor of Infosys Technologies Ltd., was conferred the degree of Doctorate of Science (D. Sc. Honoris Causa) by the Banaras Hindu University. Speaking at the 25th convocation of the Institute of Technology (ITBHU), Dr. Murthy stressed the role of education in determining the pace of the nation's progress. Addressing the graduating students, he said, “You are amongst the chosen few who are in the position to change the course of India and perhaps even the world ”.

Mr. Murthy further implored the students to thank their parents, their teachers, and their country for providing them with an opportunity to learn at one of the finest institutions in the world. The Institute, whose undergraduate students are admitted through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) shared with the IITs, has steadily moved up the technical school rankings over the past few years. In the last major survey, it ranked 8th in the country. The Institute boasts one of the best placement records in the country.

The Institute of Technology is the merged entity of the Banaras Engineering College founded in 1919, the College of Mining and Metallurgy founded in 1923 and the College of Technology founded in 1938. Started by its founder Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya with the vision to provide engineers for independent India, the Institute continues to fulfill its vision through leadership in the Indian as well as global industry.

Mr. Murthy further talked to the students about their collective responsibility to raise India to the ranks of developed nations. He wanted the students to lead by example in work ethics, honesty and following the rule of the law. He went on to say that every student should give back a small part of their earnings to their Alma Mater.

The Institute's enviable list of CMDs and distinguished alumni have made their Alma Mater proud. Alumni members in India and aboard have been working together to give back to the Institute that they consider has had the most remarkable effect on their lives. Making a remark on this, Dr. Murthy stressed on the role of the Alma Mater to help strengthen the Institute for future generations. The Institute Director Prof. Lele and Professor in Charge of Placements Prof. Bansal were also excited about the role of Alumni in shaping the Institute’s future. They said they were looking forward to quality time and ideas from the alumni members in terms of curriculum inputs and guest lectures.

With a strong commitment to excellence from the Alma Mater, the alumni and industry recognition from corporate giants, the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University is well poised to continue its leadership in producing role models for taking India on the path of success.

Updates from ECE ...
Mukul Agarwal (ECE 2003) writes :

I am extremely pleased to know a few of the TECHNEX developments in ECE department and I am pretty sure that others would also like to get updates !

  • LAB

Last year batch has been able to "win" a student lab in ECE dept. ECE has given the old "microwave office" to the students of EcE. Microwave office was in a small building outside EcE main building just near the back shutter entry of the department. The keys of the lab remains with the student and they can come/work anytime. More exciting is to know that department has donated many basic equipment for students lab --- like a CRO, Function Generator, Bread-Board etc. People who tried to make big projects would understand that what a big achievement it is! (Someone from the 97 batch had made a PC based CRO and function generator -- just so that he could work in hostel on other projects :)) Kudos to 99-2003 batch for their efforts.

  • PROJECTS

In the last two TECHNEXes, a "huge" number of hardware projects were presented. Kudos to Milind/Vinayak/Pawan etc. EcE won the all over first prize. A vehicle which could track a pre-laid road was build with some innovative feedback system (without using a microcontroller!).

  • EFFORTS

Rajeev Srivastava ('99) and his gang (!) started the effort in 99. As far as I know, that was probably first good effort in getting more hardware projects in TECHNEX. Situation before that was just pathetic. Ajit Sharma from my batch was instrumental in getting this good initiative pick moomentum. And then Millind Gupta and his gang took charge for two years. I was informed that another "ignited" soul from 2003 is now all set take charge :)

  • Corporate-Support

I think one important thing missing is the corporate support. ("Funding" is not necessarily a part of "support"). We are thinking on the lines of Hughes/Talisma lines. These companies have organized software comp in campus in past. Can people out there in Motorola/TI/ST etc work with their Managers if they can through out a few circuit design competitions on campus ? It can either be part of TECHNEX or as a pre-cursor. Students would be certified. Companies would be able to recognize good talent whom they may want to offer trainings/jobs. They would also get a chance to give a talk on what the their companies are up to. Suggestions ???

  • Alumni Funding

Till students only think of small-circuits -- like "hobby electronics" kind of stuff. One of the reasons is funds. No one can afford to buy a micro-controller or DSP kit. Funding a few good projects should not be difficult for alumni. I guess funding 4-5 projects wouldnot cost more than 25-30K (<1000$). Students would send proposals and people can pick up a few of them. Suggestions ???

  • Components

Getting components in Benares is really a horrible task. Bharat Electronics used to sell them for at least 5 times the cost! Department deals directly with a few vendors from Delhi for the dept labs. We were thinking on the same lines. Student-lab can be the official entity that can deal directly with vendors. With a small funding source assured they can order components on regular basis. Unused components can either be acquired by dept labs or the students-lab can keep them. A few percent can be returned. Suggestions ???

Reverberations - Call for Articles

Dear Alumnus,

We, members of the Reverberations Team at IT-BHU hope that you are in the best of spirits and achieving new heights in your life to keep the IT-BHU flag flying high.

This time, we have decided to have a Cover Story on the "Life After Four Years At IT-BHU"(working title). We aim at presenting the unforgettable experinces of the ITians, which they have after they leave IT-BHU. The way, they go to a world of struggle and aspirations and the way they scale up new heights in their career and the different spheres of life.

How does the life make its way from lecture theaters to the training centers and then to the cabins of renowned companies? What difference does it make to the meanings of life on leaving the pacific roads of BHU for the crowdy roads of Bangalore, Bombay and even USA and other offshore destinations?

The students of IT-BHU are always keen to know about the life they will be living after completing their B. Tech. This story will give a glimpse of that life to ITians and also help them to
learn from the experiences of the alumni.

It's beyond obvious that we need lots and lots of inputs from our alumni to provide a proper cover story. So, we request you to pen down your few experiences most remarkable for you or just
type it out and mail it to ---- reverberations@rediffmail.com

Keen to listen from you...

Outrage in the IIT Community

We share the outrage of fellow IIT alumni at Satyendra Kumar Dubey's murder, who stood up to the corrupt in India.

We commend the director of IIT Kanpur for his stand. We join the IIT Bombay Alumni in gathering support in fighting the scourge of corruption.

Please wake up: angry IIT chorus

Unfortunately, corruption is not limited only in the construction community in Bihar. Dubey's ultimate sacrifice is a clarion call to all of us that the rot of corruption in the Indian society doesn't affect only the less successful or uneducated ones. Whether we live in India, America or elsewhere, our contributions to the alma mater would ultimately go waste if the all pervading corruption isn't fought and turned back.

We invite you to share your opinions, your personal experiences with corruption in India and your ideas how we may mobilize to fight this. That will be the most fitting tribute to this fearless man who died fighting for what we were taught.

We also invite you to post your condolences to Satyendra's family, including his brother who is a student at ITBHU, on this post.

Getting IT registered on Google

Google has recently launched Google's University Search. Google's University Search enables you to narrow your search to a specific school website. You can try it for things like admissions information, course schedules, or alumni news.

All the IIT's,IIM's etc are already listed. Google is encouraging people to nominate their universities to be added to Google's list of University Search, but they need a critical number of requests before they do so.

You can help us in taking a small step in establishing the IT BHU brand by following the link given below and filling up the form that comes up.

http://www.google.com/options/mycampus.html

Values to be specified :

  • The University name : Institute of Technology, BHU
  • The University URL : http://www.itbhu.ac.in
  • The rest of the fields are obvious.

Abhivyakti 2005 [IT Theatre Festival] - Report Part 1

Abhivyakti ...
It holds the purpose of inspiring the amateur artists, the legends of tomorrow and to give them strength for keeping their fire burning.
It stands for the cause of giving a platform to budding theatre artists whose energy is seeking a vent to flow out.

Abhivyakti the two day theatre festival which was held on 5-6th march 2005, during which the theatre hungry janta of IT & varanasi witnessed two major plays performed at their very own ‘Swatantrata Bhawan’ and 'Sen Gupta Hall [G-11]'.

1.Khamosh Adalat jaari hai written by Vijay Tendulkar
2.Sir Sir Sarla written by Makrand Deshpaande

Abhivyakti 05 was supported by a few theatre senti alumni of the institute, who are undoubtedly associated to theatre emotionally and professionally. Their contribution of $300 helped in making Abhivyakti a BIG success.

Media Coverage:
What the media had to say about Abhivyakti 05

Photographs:
Play1-Khamosh Adalat jaari hai

If you too were a part of the IT theatre and still wanna be ...
The ITBHU Theatre Yahoo Group

A little about Abhivyakti by Varun Grover [CIV 03] who visited the campus to be it's part ....

Ghadi mein kuchh 6 bajkar 40 minute huye they aur Banaras ki subah abhi jag hi rahi thi...jab maine phir se uss paawan dharti par...(Paawan nahin, Paa-Two kahiye..itni zyada fundoo thi)...kadam rakha.
Snaan-vnaan karke seedha pahuncha SB jahaan par 8 baje se poori team jamaa honi thi aur zara sochiye...sochiye-sochiye....ki sabse late kaun pahuncha...?? Jee haan...aapka yeh reporter Varun Grover !! Apne poore theatre career mein yeh pehla din tha jab mere se pahle wahaan poori team jamaa thi...(Haalanki mere late hone ke kaaran main Sequel ke liye bacha ke rakhoonga..'Aisa kya tha jo Varun late pahuncha...? Woh kaunsi taakat thi jisne Varun ko SB pahunchne se roka..? Dekhiye, Part-2 mein..!')

Anyways, sabka mood full enthu mein tha...par Sushant Kumar jitne cool lagne chahiye utne nahin lag rahe they...reason - pichhli shaam ki rehearsal mein unka kharaab performance! Par poore theatre group ki duaaein, aur 2 mahine ki practice unke saath thi aur shaam hote hote sirf ek hi dar rah gaya tha...(wahi dar jise har theatre waale ne jeeya hai...nahin, main 'on-stage thappad' ki baat nahin kar raha hoon...!) Woh dar tha...Janta aayegi ya nahin.

Play ki timing thi 5 baje ki...aur 530 baje hall mein kareeb 200 log aa chuke they..! ske baad cheap-guest saahab ne ek bhaashan-type dene ki koshish-type ki aur janta ne hooting-type-taaliyaan bajaayi. Ab tak 6 baj gaye aur janta double ho gayi...kareeb 500 log ab intezaar mein they ki adaalat lagegi ki nahin...!

'Khamosh...Adalat Jaari Hai' shuru hua aur mere plan ke tahat Anshu and Music team ko stage ke peechey nahin, aage (yani ki SB ke stage ke neeche, left side mein) baithaya gaya. Reason - Taaki Anshu bhi play dekh kar sahi time pe baja sake aur main bhi aaraam se play dekh sakoon! Shadow-play pe ek chhota sa choreo with Anshu ka song started the play and directed by Ruchika Agarwal (3rd Chem), this went absolutely great...! Junta wahin se samajh gayi ki kuchh fundoo hone waala hai..aur uske baad huyi Subhash Gupta and Swati ki entry.

Bhole-bhaale graamin ke roop mein Subhash Gupta ne ek baar phir apni abhinay-pratibha ki bhayankar chhaap chhodi...aur Swati ka toh kya kehna...! Naatak ke jiss hisse mein usse khamosh rehna tha (which was a lot of part in the act 2 and 3), usmein bhi usne apni aankhon se aisa rang bhara ki professionalism ek level apne aap hi uth gayi...! Sushant Singh, jo ki ek kaale-choge aur Kaale-dil ke vakeel Kashyap bane they, na jaane kahaan se (ya phir shayad apne andar se hi...:D :D) itna kameenapan lekar aaye ki janta hat-prabh rah gayi..! Sushant Singh ka role jahaan se shuru hua, wahin se janta ke involvement mein bhi jaan si aa gayi...aur janta ne uske ek-ek jhatke, ek-ek shabd ko dhyaan se pakda aur achha response diya..

Alok Awasthi as Mr. Kashikar was absolutely rocking aur unhone bhi spont-pane ke aise namoone diye ki poore hall mein har thodi der baad koi thahaka ya phir koi taaliyon ki goonj, goonj padti thi..! Mrs. Kashikar ke roop mein Gargi naamak 2nd year ki kalaakara ne sabse zyada taaliyaan batori. Mrs. Kashikar ek aisi ladiez thi jo mauka milte hi bahut aggressive ho jaati hain...aur baat baat mein - 'Kyun ree Leela..? Jaati kahaan hai..?' (Leela was Swati), chillati hain...! Tede mooh, paan-dabaaye, aur jalan evam puraane khyalon se sarabor character ko Gargi ne apni surili aawaaz mein ek alag hi andaaz de diya.

Sidharth Gupta jo ki ismein ek Theatre actor Kartik ke role mein they, ne bhi janta ko khoob hansayaa aur ek shaandaar spont bhi maara (Kya maara, woh part 2 mein! :D :D). Pulkit Bhaai, scientist Sinha ke role mein superb rahe aur woh serious look ke liye unhone shayad kaafi dino se apna bearded look bhi sambhaale rakha (ya ho sakta hai Abhivyakti convenor hone ki wajah se time na mila ho shave karne ka...!!).

3rd Mining ke Nalin Tiwari, jo ki Balu ke role mein they, unhein bhi khoob saraahna mili aur milord, please note ki saare posters par jo shandar kavitayein likhi gayi thi, woh Nalin Bhaai ne hi likhi thi...! And i must say...sab ki sab ultimate thi...!

Baad ka janta ka reaction bhi ultimate tha aur Diro saahab (SNU) bhi dekhne aa pahunche they...! Kaafi saari sankhya mein Profs aur non-it janta bhi thi...! And everybody gave a standing ovation when the team came on stage...! Singers Radha (2nd Pharma) and Sushant Joshi (4th yr, i-am-sorry-dont-know-which-engineering) were at Music with Anshu and did a great job. And yes, 4th Cera ke Anurag Gupta saahab ne acting ke alawa play mein sab kuchh karwaaya....arranging for local funds, to sets, to camera recording, to press, to publicity, to moral support....and a host of other stuff..!

Abhi bahut saari khabarein baaki hain, including the Grand Finale called Sir...Sir...Sarla par woh sab, aur iss play ki bhi kucch inside reports, in part 2...

Abhivyakti 2005 [IT Theatre festival] - Report Part 2

Theatre Bandhuon (aur Bandiniyon) ko namaskar...!!

Report Part 1 ki dil-dehla dene waali safalta ke baad A-Grade events ka B-grade lekha-jokha lekar ek baar phir aapke saamne haazir hain – Fizool Lakhnavi. Jaisa ki naam se zaahir hai, hum koi bhi kaam fizool mein nahin karte (waise uss hisaab se naam ‘na-Fizool’ hona chahiye tha, par wo-h ‘na-maakool’ se kaafi milta julta hai isliye shayad Abba-huzoor ne nahin rakha!)
Anyways, jaisa ki ab tak andaza lag gaya hoga, (Andaza bole toh idea, varna sun ke toh lagta hai Anda kha ke hone waali koi beemari hai – Anda-za!), aaj ki humaari reporting thodi chaaloo kism ki rahegi kyunki pehli waali reporting thodi Engineering Lecture ki tarah ho gayi thi. Aap logon ne phir bhi usse pasand kiya, yeh aapki na-samajhi hai ya badappan, keh nahin sakta. Shayad badappan hi hoga…(waise bhi, Veerappan toh ab mar chukka hai..!)
‘Sir…Sir…Sarla’ wo-h pehla play tha jise dekhne ke baad mujhe laga tha ki abhi duniya main maine kuchh dekha hi nahin…! (Uske baad kitni baar aisa laga hai, yeh nahin bataaounga…!) Aur jab Sumit Saxena, 3rd Mining, ne aaj se kareeb 2 saal pahle mujhse kaha ki wo-h yeh naatak banana chahta hai toh mujhe laga wo-h IT ke bhookhe bhediyon ke saamne ek naazuk memne ko daalne ki baat kar raha hai…!
Aur 6 March ko iss memne ka show dekhne main bhi wahin pahuncha, fark sirf itna tha ki yeh naatak memne ki khaal mein ‘Tiger Memon’ nikla…yani ki bahut hi khatarnaak. Pahle din ki safal shuruaat ke baad poori Abhivyakti team ka enthu kaafi high tha aur yeh maana ja raha tha ki kam se kam aaj, Janta ki koi fight nahin hogi kyunki jo log ‘Adaalat’ dekhne aaye they, wo-h aaj shaam bhi aayenge hi! Aaj shaam ke liye Venue-Gopal bhi change they…kyunki director ki vision ke hisaab se, yeh waala play G-11 mein zyada achha lagta. Iss natak ke sets bhi shaandaar lage aur G-11 mein itna bhaari set-design kabhi nahin laga hai, itihaas ‘saakshi’ hai. (Aur Mallika Sherawat…hee hee hee…!!) Par dopahar hote-hote Director saahab ki shakal dekh kar aisa lagta tha jaise poora set unhone apne kandhe par hi uthaya ho…Baaki do kalakar, Mridula aur Nishant thode cool nazar aate they. (Shayad abhi-abhi 7-Up maar ke aaye they!)
Par backstage jaakar dekha toh Sumit saxena abhi make-up hi lagwa rahe they. Tab kya tha, samay bitaane ke liye, karna hai kuchh kaam…humaare jaise ‘Fizool’ ke logon ko 2-4 BeFizool ki baatein karne ke liye on-stage bula liya gaya. Humne shuru kiya, ‘Mujhe yeh insti chhode huye 2 saal ho gaye…’ lekin tabhi andar se aawaaz aayi, ‘Abe kameene, har 6 mahine mein toh chala aata hai mooh uthaaye yahaan, ab kisse ullu bana raha hai 2 saal ki baat se. (Par Amit Jee ne K3G mein humein ek bahut achhi cheez sikhaayi hai, ‘Keh diya…toh bas keh diya…haayein..!’) Toh hum bhi date rahe aur jaise hi humaare Sir (Nishant), Sarla (Mridula) aur Phanidhar (Sumit) taiyyar huye, humne apni kursi grahan kee.
Naatak ke shuru mein bhari-bhari kavitaaon ke hone se janta kuchh der tak toh sann rahi par jahaan Sir aur Phanidhar ke beech aaropon-pratyaropon ka silsila shuru hua, janta ko bhi maze aane lage. Sarla ki entry ke baad toh play (as per majority of public opinion) “Ek Film ki tarah chala!” Aur iska kaafi sara shrey jaata hai Sumit Saxena ke direction aur John Abhishek (2nd Year ka ek aur honhaar beerbaan) ke sangeet ko. Act 1 ke khatam hote-hote janta ke parkhachhey ud rahe they aur sirf 5 minute ka break (which was needed for the costume change by Sarla) bhi bhaari lagne laga. Act 2 mein wo-h saari gutthiyaan sulajhti hain, jinhein teeno actors ne Act 1 mein badi khoobsurati se uljhaya tha…! Sumit Saxena ko sabse zyada taaliyaan mili (kyunki shayad unke pyaar mein haarte huye kirdaar ke phat padne se janta identify kar paayi..!?) Sarla ke role mein Mridula ne wo-h kar dikhaya jo main nahin jaanta kinhi Shandon mein bayaan kiya ja sakta hai ya nahin. Nishant Tripathi, ne Sir ke role ke saath bharpoor justice kiya, aur much-deserved taareefein bhi jhola-bhar batori. Sumit Saxena as a director jitne creative dikhe, as an actor utne hi energetic aur intelligent bhi nazar aaye.
Naatak khatm hote hote aise bahut saare pal ikathhey ho gaye jab janta ko apne aansoo rokne pade…aur Makrand Deshpande likhit play ki ending ko halka sa twist dekar Sumit jee ne ispar apni pataaka-chhaap bhi laga dee. As expected, ek baar phir Standing ovation se G11 ka Centre of gravity thoda dagmaga gaya…! Par wo-h kahte hain na – ‘Hungama hai kyun barpaa, thodi si toh change huyi hai…!’ Naatak ke baad Sumit, Sushant, Pulkit, aur Vipul Naagar Bhaiyya (Abhinay-Jyoti ke sanchaalak, jinhone dono plays mein dher saara creative and otherwise input diya.) ne stage par aakar 2-shabd ke naam par kai saare shabd kahe. And after such a successful show, janta ne sab kuchh suna…aur apun ek baat bole toh beedu, sunna-ichh maangta hai…!
Aur iss tarah se 2-din ka samaaroh aap sab ki duaaon aur sponsorship ke chalte, superhit ho gaya. Aur jaisa ki aksar hota hai, ‘Yaadein dil ke raste jaati hain, aur aankhon ke raste baahar aati hain.’, program khatam hote hi ek chhota sa, very personal-sa, rone-dhone ka kaaryakram hua. Kuchh naadan log toh apne kapade bhi le aaye hostel se ki yahin dhulwa lete hain, Dhobi ke paise bachenge. Par unhein kya pata, ‘Zindagi shaam ke baad dheere hi chala karti hai, Namak ke paani mein bas aankh dhula karti hai…’ Well, kaafi senti ho gaya, aur Fizool Lakhnavi zyada senti maarne ke mood mein nahin hai, wo-h bhi group par. Jisko chahiye ho, personal email maar dewe, hum Sentiyaap-Chalisa bana ke bhej denge.
Aur agar aapko lagta hai ki katha yahin samaapt hoti hai toh aisa nahin hai…2-3 din ke andar Part 3 bhi chep daalenge….aur usmein hongi kuchh insider reports, kucch bitter reviews, aur haan kuchh aur masaaledaar khabarein bhi jo abhi tak kahin nahin chhhapi…! (Iss poore para ko zara phir se padhiye, uss tone mein jiss tone mein yeh log TV Skyshop pe body building ka saaman bechte hain)
Abhi ke liye itna hi, aur hopefully, Yahoo waale itni lambi mail lene se mana nahin karenge…!
Aur Ani-1 ke trend ko jaari rakhte huye….Harr Harrr Mahadev….!!

Reverberations: The college magazine - Now available online

History never disputes a written word and future seldom betrays itgoes the saying and hence was generated a wave of literary passion by the name of ‘GRAFFITTI’ – The first full-fledged student magazine of ITBHU started in late 80’s.  Over the years, as the meaning of a college magazine (per se) evolved and newer orientations explored, a broader canvas was envisaged for the issues that could be addressed through a versatile medium like print. After much deliberation and by the support of the ITBHU Alumni Association, 'REVERBERATIONS – The IT Magazine' was launched in 1997-98.

After completing 10 issues in print in 2003, the e-bug has caught up with this echo of ITBHU’s sentiments, views, and latest happenings, and by going online ‘Reverberations’ is taking a step very much with the tech-times. The latest issue, with 'LIFE AFTER ITBHU' as a cover story, marks the beginning of another strong association between the ITBHU Alumni Association and the student team back at college as from now on, every semester, a joint team of alumni and students will work hand-in-hand to bring out the subsequent editions of the magazine.
