Library Automation Project – Status from the Institute.

The people in the institute are actively working towards providing better facilities to the students and the research community. Please read on to see the various plans those are afoot in that direction.

In the first phase towards library automation, we are trying to provide electronic access to various journals. The reason being that budget for our IT library is too less, it is not sufficient enough to have journals in the form of hard copy purchased for each academic discipline. Added to that, the hard copies of the journals have to be accommodated within the library premises. That means more space needs to be created and more manpower is to be employed to handle the increasing number of books. Addition of space requires funds and UGC is giving funds only for purchase of books & journals. On the manpower front, situation is otherwise. The number is coming down each year due to retirement of staff. BHU is not willing to fill up the vacant positions. So by having electronic access to journals we will not have these kinds of problems and for the same money we will have access to 10-15 times more number of journals. This would hopefully help to improve research facilities for which we are better scored even compared to some of the IITs. Towards this end, some progress has already been made. ISDN line has come to IT main library. Additional computers will come within a week from now. Seeing the progress and the flux of students, we may go for more number of computers.

In the second phase, on which we will start working shortly, probably within a week or so, we would like to automate the issue, return and enquiry system. For this purpose, including the systems for creating the database of books and journals, we would need about six systems and a server. We also plan to modify the existing layout related to the front desk and wish to have it air-conditioned to create a space where people would like to come, sit and study. Needless to mention that such an automation will require bar-coding of books, creation of database, etc.

We would like the alumni to come forward and suggest anything that can make the library more useful and meaningful.

We are happy to note that some of the alumni are interested in helping us out. Please let us know to what extent you can help and in what possible manner would you would like to extend the help

hi,
It's good that we are going for all these facilities. But it would be better that we have it for THE STUDENTS and NOT FOR THE SOLE ACCESS OF THE FACULTY itself. As far as the present situation is concerned, there is only one pc that is having access to the online journals and has the ISDN connection. And the fact is that you people have enclosed that pc in a cabin and only faculty is allowed to access the pc. The students have access to the 4 pcs which have internet connection through the computer centre. Won't it be better if you have Linux installed on the particular pc and treat it as a proxy server. That way you won't have students mishandling the pc. This way you can have more space for having more pcs installed in the particular room. Moreover the person sitting there to take care of the pcs does not have any knowledge regarding computers. Has that person been recruited to look after the pcs or to look whether any student is stealing away the monitor, cpu or the whole computers themselves. I don't understand when there are so many unemployed people having all the knowledge we require for handling the library pcs, why do you have to recruit a person who doesn't know the difference between the supervisor password and the password required by the computer center for access to the internet. What he only does is tell the students that you do not have access to the pc that's kept inside. nothing else. There's an IBM machine outside the cabin with a floppy disk stuck inside it. I am quite sure that the floppy disk will stay there for years to come and finally that pc will be a piece of junk. That too IT won't be able to sell. It would lie in the institute premises as garbage. As it happens with most of the computers.

Hi Junta,

Without sounding condescending would like to bring to the notice that we ITIANs don't put our money where our mouth is. It sounds little pessimistic, but given the snailish pace of fund-raising for the library project, one can't draw any other conclusion.
Hope this messagwe would be viewed in right perspective.

thanks

I am a third year student..i wish to bring to your notice..that ..if there is an isdn line at the it main library, accessible by the students ,then it has not been publicised enough to let the students know.there has been no notice or intimation in this regard..nor has any sign been put up at the library as such.

Nitin,
Nice thinking ... let see what the people at the library and at various departments have to say about this.

First of all I would like to congratulate our faculty members, students, library staff and fellow alumni for taking this initiative. It's a great effort to improve the infrastructure in IT-BHU. I would like to suggest that a searchable digital database should also be maintained for all the B.Tech. Project reports, M.Tech. and Ph.D. theses (e.g. in PDF/PS format) for later reference. It'll be much easier for the new students to find and consult a specific thesis in soft format. It will also reduce the space and maintenance cost needed for theses from different departments.

It's very good we are going for online journals;HRD is also helping it(they have provided IEEE subscription free for universities) it's also a good sign in upgrading facilities from govt front.Even we will have all the things online sometimes we badly need hard copy.so pls plan to have a good printer in library too.
