Your Background:

GPA:- Average
Work Exp(Jobs/Internships):- Worked at IISc (CEDT) for summer training. Had about an year's experience in TI, Bangalore.
Probably CEDT work was useful but not sure about TI work exp as far as apping is concerned. For second year summer I
just stayed in BHU and got a few paper completed with BN Basu.
Publications:- Had a few reputed international publications and few conference presentations
Projects and Advisor:- I worked with prof B. N Basu for three years. That was very helpful in many aspects. To know
what it means to do research in general as well as to get a few publications which helped in application process.
My accademic projects were sampled from varied fields like DSP, circuits, microprocessors etc. Did a lot of work for
TECHNEX so number of projects was never a problem for me.
GRE Score:- Below Average!
TOEFL Score:- Pretty Good!

Additional Comments:- -- Join some prof early and get a few publications.
-- Be serious about internships.
-- Be cautious about GPA not falling too shrply!!
-- Participation in local tech activities really gives good impression on selectors.
Feedback About Higher Studies:- Haven't yet graduated !! But think it was a good decision. You get a big exposure and
opens up opportunities for doing many more things than what you can with just BTech.

Additional Comments:- Don't loose heart if you don't get your dream university in the first attempt. If you get a job in
a relevent area (in which you plan to apply next year), continue it. If you plan to do a PhD, take admit in MS at a lower
ranked university, work hard there, get lots of publications and good grades in MS, then apply to the top 5 universities
for PhD. Choose your PhD supervisor after a lot of research (talk to a lot of students who have worked under him).
Feedback About Higher Studies:- My thoughts on Ph.D. !!!
Positive Points:
+ Alternative career as a university professor
+ Work on the state-of-the-art and extend it
+ Work in the area of your interest: higher work satisfaction and joy of solving unsolved problems
+ You own your research (in some universities including the University of Waterloo) and if you get a break through idea
during your research, you can start a company provided the investors feel that your idea has a commercial value.
+ Your association with your supervisor and fellow Ph.D. students gives you very important networking. You can exploit
their technical expertise and industrial contacts if you decide to join the university or start a company.
+ Attend conferences and meet new people (networking): suitable for switching jobs and starting a company
+ Less pressure of meeting the product deadlines: work at your own pace
+ Flexible timings: easier to manage time for a vacation
+ More time for sports and other physical activities
+ Affordable lessons of sports and other extra-curricular activities in University
+ More wide range learning opportunities by attending workshops and courses in other departments and faculties
+ Higher stability: less stress of the market and the economy
+ Work on all the aspects of your research project(s): wide range learning suitable for managing large projects later
in your career
+ Giving presentations, seminars and lectures improves the public speaking skills
+ Writing papers, reports, proposals, thesis improves the documentation skills
Negative Points:
- Lower salary during the Ph.D. (around 4 years)
- Miss the work experience: The Ph.D. experience is more general, in industry it's more area specific so industrial
experience is more suitable for a job that requires specific skills.
- If you are not careful in the selection of your Ph.D. research area, you may end up doing research work that is too
theoretical or too futuristic to be suitable for the present industry needs.
- Industrial projects are executed faster so you got to do several projects in a relatively short time but typically you
do the same kind of work in almost all the projects. It makes you expert in that specific area and more desirable for
similar jobs. However, It has two draw backs: (i) if your area of expertise is no longer hot in the industry, it's
difficult to sustain progress in your career, (ii) after sometime the tasks become mechanical and boring.
- Industrial projects are more result oriented. Hence less effort is put into analysis of the problem. However analysis
is necessary to understand the problem completely. Deep understanding of a problem results in innovative solutions.
While working on an industrial project, you might have a feeling of rushing too fast without putting enough thinking.
This might cause stress and feeling of not being in control.
Conclusion:
In the short term, Ph.D. option may not seem attractive from money point of view but in the long term Ph.D. gives you
skills that take you long way. The initial investment of four years eventually pays off. Apart from respect associated
with the degree, Ph.D. gives you opportunities to choose any kind of career from university to industry, from research
to entrepreneurship etc. Finally, it's about your own priorities for the type of work and life you would like to have
in the future.
Working in the industry is like driving on a highway. You have to go within the speed limits. You can't go too fast or
too slow. Your pace is limited by the pace of other people. You don't have time to consult your map. Also, you can't change
your direction without taking an exit.
Coming back to university is like taking an exit, reorganizing your goals, checking your directions, re-routing your path,
taking gas (read more training in a specific area). Then, coming back to the highway with higher energy and better focus.

Additional Comments:- DOs- A balanced application, I had a GPA of 8.6 ~3.2 in US.Not great but quite a decent GRE score.
I had quite a decent research experience. Very Strong recomendations- or say very strong recommenders..
Most importantly, I had quite convincing SOP(I would say this is one of the testimony of motivation for higher studies).
Explore interdiscplinary research such as biomedical, robotics etc.
Donts- Dont screw up your GRE score. Dont let your GPa fall below 8.5- I would term this as a golden figure.
Dont chose a research area which doesnt have funding in US- say for example antennas.
Also be cautious about choosing too competetive areas as well like DSP and VLSI.

Additional Comments:-
a) Give GRE sincerely.High GRE score alone can't give you admission, but a low GRE score will hamper
 your chance considerably.
b) Getting good grades is also imp, sometimes you can sneak past over other ppl just on the basis of
your better academic record.
c)Try to understand all the fields and try to explore different areas. It will give you enough chance so that you can
pick and work in some good attractive field.
d) Give time to your SOP and CV. Every single thing in your application packet deserve good amount of attention.
e)Access your standing in terms of grades/gre/projects and then choose univs. Try to go for some safe univs, but
then also take your chances in supertough univs.
f)Take your own decisions even if it is quite risky. People will say hundred 'NOs' and 'YESs'.

Importance of Sub GRE:-
Additional Comments:- My strong points were good recommendations, very good grades and solid work experience.
I worked on some latest technologies but not too research oriented. Here is the list of the steps that I feel are important:
1) Secure 8+ grades (the higher the better)
2) Do projects with good professors (try to publish some paper). If nothing else, you will atleast know about the latest
research in the field of your interest.
3) Try to get good marks (1300+ should be OK) in GRE and 250+ in TOEFL.
4) Search for the universities intelligently. Sometimes universities with low ranks do better work in some areas as
compared to high rank unversities.
5) Your SOP and Recommendation letters should be as general as possible. Do not narrow down the preferences. It will
narrow down your chances also. For instance, if you are interested in just VLIW processors, give your choice as
computer architecture and not just VLIW.
6) Contact the professors, it might help you. Also, ask the professors in IT/ IIT to give you some references.
7) If working then explore the possibility of study leave from your employer.
Feedback About Higher Studies:- I had 3 years of work experience before going for higher education. Still I felt
that I learned a lot new things during the Masters. I feel more confident now while starting on a new project.
Actually, even the company will be more confident before giving the new assignment to me.

GPA:- Not That Impressive (!)
Work Exp(Jobs/Internships):- First of all in the GPA section quantifiable options should be given. For the record my
GPA was 7.98 and I consider it not so impressive. This can bea pointer for the web-management for quantifyign GOOD
Excellent, Average etc. At the time of application I had around 3 years VLSI job experience in Motorola. Reserach
background was virtually nil.
Publications:- NO publications whatsoever at the time of application.
Projects and Advisor:- I did my B. tech project under R. Dwivedi. Got rave reviews there in IT but in reality it
was not so impressive either.

transistor levele circuit design so obviously Analog Design was the specialisation
Expected University to Join:- Here I would like to take preceptorial rout. We in India are crazy about USA universities.
Even noname universities is favoured over Universities of other countries. For instance Canadian University such as
University of Toronto, University of Waterloo, University og MacGill, University fo McMaster are way way better any noname
University in USA. So do consider this option.
Expected Advisor:- Associate Professors are the best to work with. Astt. profs have virtually no clout and Profs have
too much clout.

Importance of GRE/TOEFEL Scores:- Not really
Importance of Sub GRE:-
Additional Comments:- IF somehow your GRE/TOEFL score is below par and even your grades are below par, everything is
not lost. Get Job experience in the relevant field this socres great many points over others. Yeah do apply to canadian
University, particularly to the University of Waterloo. These folks here give admission to folks from IIT easily. Don't
worry BHU is considered among IITs. Another silver lilning you don's need GRE for applying to ECE in University of Waterloo.

Biggest point after all this, if you want to know thw reputation of this university. Then here is the thing: Best of the
companies in their field which limit their campus recruiting to Universities like Stanford BErkeley and MIT have Waterloo
in their list. PArticualrly ask anyone who is employed in NVIDIA they will tell you how are Waterloo grads viewed in job
market.
Good luck.
Feedback About Higher Studies:- About MS degree I have nothign to say even if you don't feel motivated enough you
can sail through it but for anyone who is thinking about PhD must read the following article first before jumping

Importance of GRE/TOEFEL Scores:- Yes, but can be compensated by other achievements
Importance of Sub GRE:-
Additional Comments:- In my opinion GPA is the most important criteria to get admit and scholarship. If GPA is not good it
can be compensated with an International publication which is backed up by good Professor recommendation. Definitely pay
attention to grades they help a lot. Everyone who are willing to do higher studies should try to do an internship in
IITs, IISc or outside university and try to do good work there so that Prof. gives good recommendation. Also don't take
GRE lightly. Try maintaining minimum of 2000. Below this hampers ur admission inspite of great credentials.
Feedback About Higher Studies:- Higher Education is very helpful for one's career. Not only it helps u earning more but
also gives new dimensions to think. In my opinion every student should go for higher studies whether MS, MBA or PhD.

- My strong point was my GPA and my GRE score -Students should get involved in undergraduate research as soon as possible. This was one area I think I missed out on. -Apply for Phd unless you are pretty sure the univ wont let you leave after an MS if you wish to.

Feedback About Higher Studies:-

Studying VLSI / Computer Architecture here has been an invaluable experience.
I have learnt an amazing lot both in school here and during my internship. All my professors here have been great and the projects
I have had to work on have been of high quality. If you are passionate about any EcE area during bachelors, you should definitely go
for a masters.
