What Kind of Internship is Ideal:-Research Institute is always better: Gives a very good idea about the latest research and has relaxed atmosphere for learning. Like one of my friend did internship at MIT (was from IIT Delhi)and had a very good mentorship by Prof. A.Chandrakashan.
What is the Ideal Time for an Internship:-3rd year.
Tips to Secure a Good Internship:-Best person to get industry contacts are Professors. And generally institutes contacts can be found by googling and contacting those guys through email directly showing a very strong desire to work (of course good credentials help). One very important and missed part of contacts are Alumni. Most of the alumni are more than willing to help, so use the network.
Tips to Secure and Internship Abroad:-Not very sure, but have seen lots of people applying online (most of the colleges have kind of exchange programs).

Additional Comments:-It is a very good idea to make a very good working rapport with the Professor at the Institute. In general, they have lots of contacts: so if you can impress them with your work, they will be more than willing to get you placed at a good place for internship. Secondly, we at BHU dont really have or use Alumni network. Lots of people are placed at real good places and pretty high up in hierarchy. And I guess most of them will be ready to help for internship/job or even mentor. So, please utilize the Alumni network -- it certainly helps.

What Kind of Internship is Ideal:-My aim in an internship was to learn in my area and for that I think a research institute or a small company where you will have a good supervisor who expects some work from you is a good place. A job should be such which you haven't done before, so that you discover how to apply things you already know and also learn new things.
What is the Ideal Time for an Internship:-I think after 2nd year every year one can go for internships.
Tips to Secure a Good Internship:-To get an internship in Indian companies, I don't have much idea, but I think visiting offices of small companies might be helpful, many big companies have internship programmes on their websites. For internships in Research Institutes, contacting the people there is important. Email them, call them but if they refuse outright do not spam them.
Tips to Secure and Internship Abroad:-If you know an european language that may be a plus point, since many jobs and openings in Europe require the knowledge of the local language.
Recommended Companies/Institutes:-The German Fraunhofer Institutes call students from India every year. They should be checked out very importantly. www.fhg.de Infineon Technologies in Munich calls students from the IITs every year. Many Universities like University of Dortmund, University of Hannover, Freiburg University calls students but here you should contact the proffs directly.
Additional Comments:-Getting a good internship is very much possible. People in ITBHU do not try hard enough for that. Start your mailing and networking from September middle. Learn from your mistakes. Contact a lot of people and if they show interest try calling them. By December end or Jan end you will have a good internship.

What Kind of Internship is Ideal:-Industry exposure is also important. For exmaple it becomes very useful if you are coming for MS staright from school. Should have some idea how industry works. (That reduces the craze for industries!!)So I guess best idea is to look for good companies in scond year and some good research lab in third year. Also utilize all resources once you get into some good research institutes. For example CEDT library was terrific. I was working on DSPs but got interested into Pentium architectures due to CEDT library!!
What is the Ideal Time for an Internship:-both second and third year. But third year is more important.
Tips to Secure a Good Internship:-1) As I said, work with a prof in dept as early as possible. He would help you whenever possible. 2) Use google as much as possible. Number of universities/industries have well established student programs. For example Jawarlal Nehru Center (JNC) in IISc or TI, India. You should be aware of these. Just google around. Also number of them publishes application forms in news papers as well. You need to be aware of deadlines, need to be aware of where application forms get published. Don't miss the dates. Start searching sooner. 3) Keep your eyes open. Talk to friends , see where they did internships and how they contacted people. Use alumni network. Ask seniors. 4) Look for abroad interns as well. Check out websites of Max Planck, ETS (swis), Fraunhofer etc. They have pretty well established student programs. 5) You can try for summer programs in US univs as well. Number of them have summer programs.
Tips to Secure and Internship Abroad:-Just net browsing. Emailing professors. Talking to people who have done before. Last but not least self confidence and enthisiam to do something nice.
Recommended Companies/Institutes:-TI, India, ST, Mcroelectronics, ADI, IBM Research in IITD, IISc, JNC in IISc, TIFR, CEERI, Max Plack Institute, ETS, Fraunhofer institute, al european companies (much easier to get in than US companies)
Additional Comments:-See above comments. Believe in yourself. If people have done it before -- you can also do it. Just start planning things before it gets too late. Net-browsing is not as waste of time as people make it out to be :)

What Kind of Internship is Ideal:-Depends on your goals. For MBA aspirants, company training is ideal particularly if it involves exposure to corporate/business practices. For MS/PhD aspirants, research institutes are more suited. If possible, try to get a project which can lead to publications. While on an internship talk to people about the other options for future internships/higher studies. Keep in touch with your supervisor/colleagues for future opportunities.

Tips to Secure a Good Internship:-Talk to your seniors and alumni. They can give you pointers about whom to contact and how to proceed. If feasible, just visit the institute and meet the potential supervisors personally (very few reply emails!). Nevertheless, email wherever you can find work of your interest. Also try to search on the internet. Talk to the professors in the department. Sometimes their students/friends/former colleagues are faculty members/scientists in some other universities and research institutes.

Additional Comments:-Do the internship for at least 3-4 months. Very few profs give recos if you don't work enough with them. If you like the work, you can intern the same place in 2nd and 3rd year. Longer internships generate publications. During my 2nd year internship in CEL, I was happy to find an ECE-ITBHU alumni as our section manager. Even though he was very senior, he approached us and asked about the department/professors. Other senior people there also regarded BHU very highly. Very often they used to call it IIT-BHU. All I am trying to say is, BHU is highly respected everywhere. So be confident and apply to the top institutes/companies.
