Agilent Technologies All India Best B.Tech Project Award

As you all know, Agilent has stood for innovation in territories that matter, blazing trails in the fields that are shaping the modern world. We have also continued our founders' long-standing tradition of supporting education and improving the quality of the talent available to the society. In line with these values, we are now embarking upon a major initiative, which is aimed at igniting the spirit of innovation among budding engineers in our country.

I am pleased to share with you the launch of Agilent Technologies All India Best B.Tech Project Award beginning January 2005 for Indian engineering students. 25 engineering institutes have been invited to submit their best B.Tech project submitted by students as part of their course curriculum. The final contest is scheduled to be held in Delhi in June. Two winning students would be awarded with an all-expenses paid one-month summer internship at Agilent's best-in-class facilities in the US or UK, and would be presented with a certificate of recognition and a trophy.

Details on the Agilent Technologies All India Best B.Tech Project Award can be found on www.agilent.co.in and athena.mediaturf.net/agilent/. Attached is the list of 25 engineering institutes which are being invited to participate in the contest in this inaugural year.

This contest has a larger social objective. While Indian engineers have made their mark in software, they are yet to make an impact in hardware development. A majority of global investments have traditionally been directed towards cutting-edge development in
electronics and hardware. Attempts by our Government are underway to make India an attractive manufacturing hub. However, to realize this dream, India would need many more `Hands-on Engineers' rather than the presently available `Copybook Engineers'. Our intent is to make a beginning towards correcting this imbalance, by incentivizing Hands-on Engineering as the learning model amongst the leading engineering institutes of India. Through this, we hope to encourage future engineers to enhance their understanding of technology by employing theoretical knowledge for resolving real life issues.

This is a major initiative for Agilent Technologies in India, and our vision is to grow this contest year by year and make it a sought-
after national recognition by the engineering community. To succeed in this ambitious task, I need your help.

For this initial year, we need to create a buzz around this contest in as many engineering campuses as possible. If you are the alumni of one of the invited colleges, you can contribute immensely by approaching the professors and students, and encouraging them to participate actively. If you are traveling to one of the regions where these institutes are located for business or otherwise, you could take time out to visit them and motivate the professors and students to participate. We are looking at champions who can work with us to publicize this initiative as widely as possible.

This is a chance for all of us to give something back to the institutes that enabled us to earn our present status. I urge you to come forward and partner this initiative actively. Please contact Theresa Khoo if you have suggestions on how else you can help in this project.

Thank you for your support.

Regards,
Kewal Khanna

We are pleased to announce the launch of two new components on EcE alumni website (both of which we plan to move on to the institute level depending upon the response we receive):-

1. CAREER DEVELOPMENT FORUM
Website :- http://www.itbhu.org/chapters/dept/ece/archives/Career-Forum.html

2. TECH FORUM
Website :- http://www.itbhu.org/chapters/dept/ece/archives/Tronics-Forum.html

DETAILS
1. CAREER DEVELOPMENT FORUM
Website :- http://www.itbhu.org/chapters/dept/ece/archives/Career-Forum.html

Our goal is to build an exhaustive technical and informative database of contacts, career feedbacks, useful tips, information pointers, resource repositories etc. from as many of ITBHU passouts as possible. And also to extract easily presentable and viewable statistics. Target audiences and corresponding aims are follows -

a) Current students so that they can make an educated career choice as well as to provide them an idea of what best EcE ITBHU can potentially offer them. Aim is also to help them locate resources and required information needed for applying for summer internships, applying for MS/PhD, applying for MBAs etc.
b) Relatively recent pass outs so that they know where to look around for technical contacts and feedback from senior and more successful alumni if they want to explore new horizons in their professional life such as further education, a management degree, switch in profession, starting a new venture etc.
c) Alumni volunteers team so that they know whom to contact if they needed technical, professional, corporate or institutional help in starting, organizing or executing projects to help institute.
d) Outside world and prospective students so that they know better about great career options available at EcE IT-BHU.

2. TECH FORUM
Website :- http://www.itbhu.org/chapters/dept/ece/archives/Tronics-Forum.html

We have started a tech forum on an experimental basis. The aim of the forum is to get the current students an exposure to the latest technology/issues/problems so that they can make an educated choice about their future careers. The forum is in very nascent stage. We expect that as the time passes by it would get momentum and start functioning of its own without our intentional intervention. But to begin with we need volunteers (primarily senior alumni in technical industry and educational institutions) who would take the responsibilty of regularly posting the latest happenings in their areas of expertise to keep everyone informed and motivated about the cutting edge world that lies in front of them. Please feel free to post anything you feel would be interesting, informative, fun reading or motivating while maintaining the technical nature of the forum.

If you have any comments or feedbacks please feel free to email any of the ece-volunteers listed in ece chapter website.

Prof Akhlesh Laktakia's Comments
Perhaps from my parochial point of view, let me point out that the research profile of IT, BHU needs to rise. Specifically, in my areas of interest, I am very glad to see the names of Drs. Basu, Jain, and Vishwakarma (EcE) as co-authors of research articles in international peer-reviewed journals. I also come across papers by Drs. Ojha and O.N. Singh (Applied Physics). It is always a pleasure to tell my colleagues that they should consult a paper written by a BHU-IT researcher. More faculty members must undertake original research and publish. They should be inspired by the example of Chinese researchers, who have arrived on the international scientific scene much like Virender Sehwag in the first over against Bangladesh today.

Some years ago, S. Jagadish, then an undergraduate EcE student, was very active in research. (He went on to get a PhD from MIT, and will have a distinguished career.) A few days ago, I saw that Mukul Agarwal also published papers while an undergardaute EcE student. Both deserve kudos, and their research mentors also.

So, why not make undergraduate research a requirement? After all, BHU-IT students are highly capable and talented. Their final-year projects should not simply be design-oriented, but also contain essential novely. (The undergraduate program of my department at Penn State is a Honors Program, and very student is required to write a Senior Thesis containing original research and design elements.)

Another suggestion is directed towards the alumnuses of EcE. After yu have achieved some glory, try to include faculty members of BHU-IT in your research endeavors. Prof. Banmali Rawat (University of Nevada, Reno) is an excellent example in this regard. Another example may be found in the book Electromagnetic Fields in Unconventional Materials and Structures (ON Singh and A Lakhtakia, eds, Wiley, New York, 2000), which contains two chapters by BHU-IT faculty members
and is co-edited by one.

Bottom line: The more times that the name of BHU-IT comes up
on the Internet, journals and books for research and innovation, the higher would its reputation be.

Electronics Engineering 2004 Batch Achieves Record Placement

Electronics Engineering 2004 batch has achieved the best all time placement by any branch and batch in the history of IT-BHU. ECE-04 batch has received 85 job offers among 50 students (170% job placement). This is a record in the job placement history of Training and Placement Cell at IT-BHU (since 1977-78). The best part is that each student of ECE-04 has received at least one job offer. The highest paid offer is 8.5 Lakhs/year, which is also highest in IT-BHU this year.

Bravo ECE-04! Way to go guys.

Intel Student Research Contest
Intel organises an all India level student research contest every year. Undergraduate students from top colleges of India (IITs, BITS Pilani etc.) are nominated by a key faculty member. Each institute from a selected list of premier institutes can send only one team of two students. Altough IT-BHU is enlisted in this prestigious list, no team from IT-BHU is named among the 2003-2004 finalists. I am not sure if no team from IT-BHU participated in this contest or they could not make it to the finals. I think we should strongly promote participation from IT-BHU in this contest particularly from ECE. In fact, we are willing to provide financial and technical help to the selected team from IT-BHU. Please visit the following link for more details:
