Point 1:

Director's message:

I am happy to learn that the “Third Annual Online Alumni Meet” is being organized by the department of Computer Science & Engineering on February 13, 2005. Such an Alumni Meet provides an opportunity to our alumni to renew the relations with each other as well as with the department and the Institute. It also permits them to know the progress made by the department and the Institute. I am also happy to note that the Alumni of the department have voluntarily come forward to help the bepartment by providing better infrastructure and other facilities. I hope this will continue in future also.
I wish success to the Meet.
Prof. S. N. Upadhyay.

Point 2a:

Rahul Hari talks about the success story for the upgradation of upstairs lab:

The upstairs lab has been upgraded successfully with 4 new computers and 1 server (HP prolient with dual Xeon processor @3.0Mhz. with 2GB RAM and 78GB X5 Hard disks). The students plan to configure NIS on the server and also use it for the intranet project of www.itbhu.org. Windows has been completely eliminated from the lab except for 3 computers out of which 1 is being used by yadav ji and 2 are not supporting linux (the gui). The labs are now being conducted on gcc. More information on this page and this page.

Point 2b:

Arpit Nand talks about the further upgradation of the lab by providing a proper power backup for the lab:

The students face problems in saving their work when the power goes off. Only 4 computers (the new ones which were purchased from the funds donated by Batch of 2002) have proper backup. Hence this should be on priority. Arpit and Ravindra (CSE06 and CSE07) will be incharge of this effort and send a proposal to cseitbhu yahoogroup. We are shooting for a 15 minute backup only for all PCs, since the duration of powercut is not long.

Point 3:

Pankaj Yadav cse05 talks about how the 3 consecutive batches of cse go online with reliance sets:

Now CSE05,CSE06 and CSE07 are using the reliance sets in their hostels for getting 24Hr. internet access. They are paying INR 1500 per month per set and the set is being shared by around 6 people. That makes it INR 250 per month for 24 Hr. internet access. Please read the transcript for a detailed timeline of this effort (search for the word 'Timeline') .

Point 4:

Rahul Hari CSE06 tells the success story as to how 8 students got summer internships at ISL, IBM Bangalore due to the efforts of two of our alumni (Gaurav Sharma (960002) and Amol Mahamuni (CSE89)):

8 students from cse06 got internships at one of the most prestigious labs of IBM India due to due to the joint efforts of these two alumni. It was due to their efforts that an MoU was signed between the institute and IBM. Further Microsoft came up to sign up an MoU with the institute after knowing about the MoU with IBM. Microsoft has also offered to provide hardware for some BTPs related to Windows CE and embedded systems. The alumni present in the meeting suggest that more summer internships can be arranged if Shukla sir (the current HOD) talks to other alumni present at high posts in various positions.

Point 5.

Animesh Pathak delivers a report on his visit to the department:

Animesh Pathak CSE03 visited the department from 28th to 31st dec. 2004. He found the LCD projector donated by the 97 batch being used by Mr. Bhaskar Biswas for taking up lectures for the students. He also offered his notes (of the networks course) at USC to Mr. Biswas for further reference, which were gladly accepted and later given to the students. He also visited the upstairs lab for checking the exact status of the lab. He was happy to know about the use of Fedora Core2 on all the computers but was a bit sad on seeing that somebody from CSE07 had tampered with the logo that signifies that the computers were donated by cse02. Snaps are online at this page. Mr. R.S.Singh, the other new faculty member, is also very enthusiastic about alumni efforts and has asked for assistance regarding classnotes etc. Parag Tandon CSE97 will be in-charge of this endeavor. It was also proposed during Animesh's visit that weekly movies be shown on the projector, a proposal that the faculty members agreed to in principle but asked that educational movies be shown. Efforts will be made to download MIT lectures etc. and show them.

Point 6.

Arun Tangri CSE06 talks about organising the tech fest for the CSE society:

The CSE society intends to organize a tech fest whereby people will have a chance to interact with the best talents in the industry. The alumni suggested that there should be talks on Linux and open source technologies. The tech fest will also comprise of overnight programming contests and quizes. It will be ensured that these do not clash with the dates for Kashi Yatra or Opulence.

Point 7:

Ravindra Patel CSE07 provided an update on the current status of the library:

It was decided that there would be some books that would be meant to be read in the deptt. itself. Just like the RR section in the ITLIBRARY. More details are at this link. It was decided that the students will provide a prioritized list of books to be bought.

Point 8:

Animesh Pathak CSE02 talks about the ways in which the useage of open source technologies should be improved in the department:

Animesh Pathak talked about the various benefits of using open source technologies. Out of which the most important one is that it is free. Another important advantage of using Linux was told that it helps in getting RA ships in higher studies.(search for 'reasons to use Linux' in the full transcript). This idea will be led by Amit Chaudhary CSE98. Arun Tangri of CSE06 will contact him and proceed.

That was followed by the open session. You are encouraged to read the transcript for that.
